Tree analogy- You can provide all the ingredients for a tree to to be successful and grow in a desired way. But in the end the tree still has to do its own growing. It will develop uniquely because of thousands of conditions and events that you have no control over.
We can bend, prune, maniplulate conditions to increase certain out comes for our tree in our effort to make it a pretty tree.
As educators we sometimes have too narrow a view of what makes a pretty tree. We can supply conditions that provide the best circumstances but in the end the students are the ones do the growing.

UDL is a framework that allows us as educators to provide instructional experiences that benefit a diverse group of learners. We can not predetermine what a student will gain from a particular instructional strategy. It might be just the right way for their learning style or it may lack elements in engagement, expression, or representation to be an effective strategy. Providing multiple pathways for students to engage, express, and receive representations of material will create more opportunities for students learn.
